Hyperion was bred by Lord Derby, by Gainsborough out of Selene. Noted for his small size (15.15h), he had a very successful racing career including victories in the Derby and St Leger. He was unbeaten as a three year old, but had a disappointing fourth season, after which he was retired to stud at Woodlands Stud, Newmarket. In his field he was truly remarkable, siring 538 foals and was six times leading sire in England and Ireland. He was the best British stallion of the 20th century and has become a cornerstone of Classic breeding worldwide.
