Alfred Wheeler was born near Bath in Somerset, his father was John Alfred Wheeler (1821-1877). Alfred specialised in sporting subjects, horseracing and fox hunting. He also painted animal portraits. Alfred is thought to have studied under his father and to have worked closely with him. Alfred and his wife Catherine had six children, two of them Walter Herbert and John Frederick became artists.
